THE Olinda Community Pool Association (OCPA) finally has reason to celebrate, with the Victorian Government announcing $500,000 to repair and reopen the iconic pool.
After months of campaigning, the OCPA had been confident funding would come through, but had waited for an official announcement before believing the pool could reopen this summer, after being closed two summers ago.
The funding all-but secures the immediate future for the pool, which had been in danger of permanent closure after cracks up to 1cm wide had been discovered running down the pool floor.
President of the OCPA, James Edge, said the association could now afford to breathe a sigh of relief.
“We’re delighted the Government has kept its election promise to fund the reopening,” he said.
“The pool is part of the social fabric of the mountain community.
“It is particularly popular with local children and teenagers.
“It’s also the only place where people in Olinda can go to cool off in summer.”
Funding was announced as part of the Victorian Budget, with work to include a community playground, which aims to ensure the precinct is used all year round.
The Victorian Government noted parks and playgrounds are where children get their first taste of physical activity, as well as important socialisation skills.
Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, said it was fantastic news for the community and the region.
“The Olinda Pool is a much-loved facility the entire community can enjoy,” he said.
“This is a great day for Olinda.
“I congratulate everyone who has worked hard to save the Olinda Pool.”
The funding is from the Labor Government’s $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, which will upgrade sport and recreation facilities, as well as promote health and wellbeing.
